Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson Named Finalist for 2011 Wells Fargo Copper Cactus Award

Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson has been selected as a finalist for the 2011 Wells Fargo Copper Cactus Awards.

Having won the 2008 Copper Cactus Award for Best Places To Work and the 2010 Copper Cactus Award for Community Service, Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson is extremely honored to be named as a finalist for a third time this year in the category of Business Growth. This category recognizes small businesses that demonstrate that they are unique and successful in the way they handle growth or change in today's marketplace.

The Wells Fargo Copper Cactus Awards celebrate the accomplishments and innovation of Southern Arizona's Small Businesses for their extraordinary commitment to the working environment, business growth, and community stewardship. The awards program - billed as the region's oldest and largest small-business recognition event - is in its 14th year.

"Finalists for the Wells Fargo Copper Cactus Awards are considered the 'best of the best' among locally owned small businesses," said Larry Finuf, regional president for Wells Fargo Community Banking in Southern Arizona. "The awards focus on the importance of small businesses in our Southern Arizona economy and the high caliber of our local business owners. Public interest in the awards has increased greatly. Since the program’s inception in 1998, participation has grown from about 200 nominations to more than 400 in 2011."

The awards will be handed out in ceremonies Oct. 12 at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa, 3800 E. Sunrise Drive. For more information on the awards and tickets to the event, please visit https://www.wellsfargo.com/jump/regional/coppercactusawards

VSCT Employees Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity

On Saturday, July 9th, 2011, nine employees and their family members from the Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson spent the day volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. The volunteers worked side-by-side with Habitat employees, other volunteers, and Habitat Home Owners to help install the framework for a roof on a new house. VSCT volunteers remarked that the experience was very rewarding to give back to the community and that installing the framework for the tile roof gave them a tangible sense of accomplishment at the end of their day. The group plans to schedule another volunteer day with Habitat for Humanity soon.

In 2010, VSCT was awarded the Wells Fargo Copper Cactus award for Community Service to honor their long-standing commitment and support to the Tucson community. VSCT employees volunteer over 500 hours of their time and donate over $70,000 annually in cash or in-kind contributions to non-profit organizations in Southern Arizona.

New Canine Glaucoma Surgery (TR-ClarifEYE™) now available exclusively at VSCT

Offering New Immunostimulant Treatment for Valley Fever in Dogs

Tucson, AZ (September 2010) - The Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson (VSCT) is now working with the Canine Valley Fever Therapeutic Network in offering a new treatment for Valley Fever in canines. The new treatment provides an alternative to existing treatments and only dogs that have failed conventional treatment are eligible.

Dog owners in the region can get more information about this new treatment or make appointments by calling VSCT at (520) 795-9955.

"This new treatment works with a new immune modulator shown to restore the cell-mediated immune response by fighting and eliminating viral, fungal and bacterial infections in dogs," states Dr. Woods, DVM, of the Canine Valley Fever Therapeutic Network. "It works to overcome the deficits of existing drug therapy and offers a new option for dogs with persistent infections. We are very excited to be offering this groundbreaking treatment here at VSCT's Valley Fever Center for Excellence."

"Our immune modulator is delivered subcutaneously at the beginning of treatment and then again two weeks and four weeks later. "Patients are monitored as required. The modulator has been evaluated in a previous pilot trial in dogs with chronic Valley Fever with encouraging results."

Dogs in Arizona are routinely exposed to Coccidioides immitis, a fungus that causes Valley Fever. After exposure, the dog’s immune system is responsible for identifying and eliminating the fungus by mounting a cell-mediated immune response. If this response fails, then dogs can develop an active infection. Although extra-label use of human antifungal drugs is commonly used to treat canine Valley Fever, these drugs do not restore appropriate immune function and many dogs do not eliminate the infection despite this treatment, most likely due to a loss in cell mediated immune function.

Veterinary Specialty Center Undergoes Building Expansion

Due to the increasing demand for our veterinary emergency and specialty services, and in order to continue to serve the pets, pet owners and veterinarians of southern Arizona, the Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson broke ground in January 2009 for a 22,000 square foot hospital building expansion that will effectively triple our overall size. This expansion was always planned and will finally come to fruition when the construction is completed roughly 6 years from the date of our initial opening in July 2004. A few facts about the hospital expansion:
  • VSCT opened to serve southern Arizona's pets, pet owners and primary care veterinarians on July 19, 2004 with 10,000 square feet offering multi-specialty medical, surgical and 24/7 emergency services. Our building expansion is projected to be complete by July/August 2010 and will bring our total hospital square footage to just over 32,000 square feet making us the largest multi-specialty veterinary hospital under one roof in the state of Arizona.
  • VSCT has full time doctors and nurses 24 hours a day, 7 day a week, 365 days a year -- we never close our doors and all of our doctors reside in Tucson available to serve you and your pets as best as we possibly
  • can.
  • Our new hospital expansion will include solar energy systems making VSCT the first multi-specialty emergency veterinary center in Arizona to utilize a renewable energy source in an effort to reduce our environmental impact.
  • VSCT currently provides more complimentary continuing education than any other veterinary center in the state. Included in our expansion is a new conference room that will seat approximately 125 people, more than doubling our current capacity for educational seminars and events.
  • Once completed, the 32,000 square foot, two-level hospital will have:
    • 16 patient examination/consultation rooms
    • 4 surgical suites
    • A separate dental/oral surgical suite
    • Expansion of our diagnostic imaging facilities with 2 digital radiology units, 2 ultrasound suites, and room for a future MRI scanner (the first for pets outside of Phoenix) in addition to our in-house helical CT scanner.
    • An even larger central ICU and in-house laboratory facility
    • I-131(Radioactive iodine) suite for treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats
    • As is the case currently, all of the examination rooms are equipped with computers for retrieval of patient information and presentation of digital radiographic images, and we will now have two designated "comfort" rooms to be used for patient visitation and client bereavement.
